Scouts Needed for Holiday Stroll

We need more scouts to work the “s’mores” station at Riverside Garage tonight. We have four 1-hour shifts: 5:00-6:00 pm; 6:00-7:00 pm; 7:00-8:00 pm, and 8:00-9:00 pm. At this point we have NO SCOUTS SIGNED UP for the 6-7, 7-8 and 8-9 shifts. We are giving out ingredients for s’mores and will have two fire pits going all evening. We are not charging for the s’mores, but collecting a free-will offering to be given to the Riverside Food Pantry. If you are available to work, please contact Ray Rogers at rogersr2@ameritech.net.

Come to November 29 Cook County Sheriff Presentation

We will be having a presentation from the Cook County Sheriff’s office on bullying at the November 29 meeting. We encourage parents and siblings to attend the meeting with their boy scouts. The meeting will be held in the Social Hall (lower level) from 7:00-8:30 p.m. This program teaches students in grades 5-8 how to identify and understand the problem of bullying and harassment. Students learn the cause of, effects of, and non-violent solutions to bullying through age appropriate activities and discussions. Internet bullying will also be discussed.

The Scouts should have read and reviewed the Engineering Merit Badge work before outing.  There may be some requirements that can be worked before arriving at the museum.  The scouts will work through the Merit Badge Activity book that Harley Davidson Museum has prepared (link), which helps them achieve the requirements through the Museum.  Scouts should print this activity book and bring it with them on the outing.  Scouts will also need to bring a scoutmaster-signed blue card.

Scouts register here by Wednesday, November 28

We will need chaperones to help with the driving and to assist the boys in working through the Merit Badge Activity at the museum.  We will want to divide the boys in small groups of 3-4 and have a chaperone help them stay on task while in the museum.  There will be plenty of time for you to explore the museum and all its exhibits.

Adults and leaders register here by Wednesday, November 28

For questions contact Susan Lynch.

Scout Night on Thursday at St. Leonard in Berwyn

Troop 32 in Berwyn has invited our Troop to an “Open Scout Night” at their meeting this Thursday, November 15 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Leonard’s in Berwyn. There will be at least 4 other Troops at the meeting and it would be a great opportunity for our Scouts to meet other Scouts. The St. Leonard’s Troop 32 has offered spots on their Philmont crew to scouts from our Troop.

Interested scouts should meet at RPC at 7:00. Depending how many scouts are interested, we may need some parent drivers.

If your scout plans to attend, please let us know by filling out a form at:

Eagle Coach Training November 15

This Thursday, November 15, we have a rare opportunity. We have Eagle Coach training that will be held at the Riverside Township Hall from 7-9pm. Close and easy to get to! (http://www.bsa-dpvc.org/Training/Training_Fliers/121115_EagleCoach.pdf) We have about half a dozen boys that may need coaches within the next 6 months. The troop could really use some parents to act as dedicated coaches for these boys starting their Eagle Service projects.

Regardless if you would consider being an Eagle Coach for a boy in the troop, if you are the parent of a Life Scout, please consider attending this training session. It will help you understand better what the scout is trying to accomplish with his project, what is expected of the scout, with what the coach will try to assist (and what he will not), as well as what the parent(s) can do to aid their son. We’ve found that there are many misconceptions from both the scout and the parent(s) with regard to Eagle Service projects and this training will help to clear them up considerably.

NOTE: This is training for adults. It is NOT the Life-to-Eagle presentation. Thus, if you can attend, it will only be for the parent and not the scout.
