Service Opportunity Sunday April 23

The Riverside Lions Club has requested our help at their annual Chicken Dinner. This dinner is their main fundraiser for their charitable projects such as service to the blind and visually impaired. The Lions Club has asked for scouts to help clear tables and assist around the kitchen as needed. They would like to have four to six scouts during the hours of noon to 5 pm on Sunday, April 23. The event will be held at the Riverside Village Hall at 27 Riverside Road. Service hours will be given for participation. Bring our Troop Service Hour Form and remember to get it signed after your shift. You should report to Lions Club member Jon Jansky at the event. Since this is a fundraiser for another organization, BSA rules state that you should NOT wear your scout uniform. For more information on the Riverside Lions Club, see their website at http://e-clubhouse.org/sites/riversidetownship/

Parent Meeting about Summer Camp

On Thursday, April 6 at 7 pm, we will have a parent meeting about summer camp in the Social Hall downstairs from our troop meeting. At this meeting, we will give an overview of Camp Tesomas, discuss transportation, merit badge class selection, as well as answer any questions. This meeting is mandatory for parents of scouts attending Camp Tesomas for the first time. Parents of scouts who have not yet signed up, please attend to learn all about this outstanding camp which is the highlight of our scouting year.

Climbing & Shooting Camp-out April 28-30, 2017

Troop 24 is heading out to a campsite near Peoria for a weekend of supervised climbing & shooting activities.  We will depart Riverside on the afternoon of Friday, April 28 and return during the early afternoon of Sunday, April 30.  These activities are sponsored by the W.D. Boyce Council at its Ingersoll Scout Reservation campground near Peoria, IL, which is a drive of 200 miles (just over three hours away).

Scouts will have an active Saturday as we have registered to do climbing activities in the morning and shooting in the afternoon.  The campsite has a 50-foot climbing tower and scouts can also rappel down it and zip line nearby.  Afternoon marksmanship involves both rifle and shotgun target practice under the supervision of instructors.

The cost of $63 per scout will cover the fees for the campsite, both activities and all meals on Saturday and Sunday morning.  Scouts should bring $10 to cover dinner on Friday on the way to Peoria.

We will definitely need drivers to help bring our scouts to this event, and we have arranged for all leaders and chaperones/drivers to have access to smaller cabins so you can sleep under a permanent roof if you don’t want to stay in a tent.

Registration will end on April 19 so we can finalize our logistics.  Remember that all new scouts need to take part in at least one of Troop 24 weekend camping trips as a prerequisite to attending the awesome week-long adventure at Camp Tesomas in July.  Weekend camping trips are a great way for all scouts to have fun and work on rank advancement requirements.

Wisconsin River Trek – July 23 – 29, 2017

Troop 24 Scouts who have completed 8th grade and are First Class or above can participate in a high-adventure canoeing trip. This trip will be led by staff of Camp Tesomas, and will take place July 23-29, 2017 (the week following our summer camp). Participation in this trek is limited to 12 participants. The cost is $475 per person. This includes all equipment, staff support, transportation during the trek, and food. Participants must be strong swimmers, and some canoeing experience is helpful. Participants must pass the BSA swimming test prior to arrival at camp. The trek includes one day of training/orientation and 5 days of canoeing and camping, so participants should have a high level of physical fitness. Since this trek is led by Camp Tesomas staff, and has limited enrollment, at this time we are accepting registrations from Troop 24 Youth members ONLY (no adults or aged-out scouts). We will accept registrations on a first registered AND paid, first come basis. Due to the cost of the trek, please pay by check made out to Troop 24. You may bring this check to the next Troop meeting or contact Mrs. Staubus at carriestaubus@earthlink.net to schedule drop-off of your payment. Parents who can assist with transportation to or from Tesomas, please note this in the comments section of the registration form.
