It is Scout Cabin Friday this week!! Don’t miss out on the scavenger hunt that the Patrol Leaders Council has planned along with a campfire and S’mores.  Look forward to seeing everyone there starting at 7:00.

Thursday Meeting

Thursday’s meeting will be limited to all scouts attending the Waterfall Glen Campout, Cooking Merit Badge, and working on Scout Rank.

  • All scouts attending the Waterfall Glen Campout must report at 7:00 to plan and prepare for the campout.  Sign up deadline for the campout is this Wednesday November 1.  https://troop24riverside.com/2017/10/waterfall-glen-nov-10-12-2017-scout-camping-form-2/
  • All scouts that need to complete the Cooking Merit Badge will meet with Mr. Flaherty.  Please have requirements 6a-c completed in the worksheets and be prepared to discuss.  We will complete requirements 6d-f during the Saturday hike at the Waterfall Glen Campout.  Cooking Merit Badge will meet again on November 9 to finish requirement 4.  For more information see MeritBadge.org
  • All scouts working to complete the Scout rank will have an opportunity to meet individually with Assistant Scoutmasters.  Review and practice your scout skills.  Parents, please review and complete Requirement 6 with your scout: 6. With your parent or guardian, complete the exercises in the pamphlet How to Protect Your Children from Child Abuse: A Parent’s Guide and earn the Cyber Chip Award for your grade.  The Parent’s Guide is in the front of the Scout Handbook.

 

Cook Your Way to the Cooking Merit Badge

The Troop 24 Cooking Merit Badge counselor will meet with scouts who have completed Requirement 6 of the Cooking Merit Badge at the Thursday meeting on Nov 2 and the Waterfall Glen Campout.  All scouts who have previously begun the cooking merit badge should review and complete Requirement 6a-c and be prepared to discuss their work at the Thursday meeting.  On Saturday of the Waterfall Glen campout each Merit Badge scout will complete Requirement 6d-f.   Troop 24 will provide the trail stoves and each Cooking MB scout will be required to bring two meals and a snack sufficient to feed 3-5 scouts (see Req 6a & 6d).  For more information see http://meritbadge.org/wiki/index.php/Cooking

Navigating Thursday’s Troop Meeting

We had an awesome night hike last week and practiced finding our way in the dark.  We are working to finish our section on hiking and navigation that will culminate in the November campout to Waterfall Glen.  This week, scouts will have the opportunity to work on their navigation skills and knowledge of safe hiking practices.  Board of Review will meet this week, please sign up.

    • SPARTANS are responsible for meeting set-up, FLAGS, and clean up. Report at 6:45 in Full Uniform.
  • SKILL INSTRUCTION
    • Navigation: Scout Handbook Section 11 pp 327-357. See Rank Advancement Requirements under Navigation.
    • Instructors & Guides will be responsible for leading and teaching navigation.
  • MERIT BADGE: [First Class & Above]
    • Mr. Jerz will be working on COMMUNICATION this week. Bring your completed workbook, BLUE CARDS and be prepared.
  • TROOP ACTIVITY:
  • CYBER CHIP:
    • Scout Rank and Star Rank need to acquire the Cyber Chip for your age. Go to http://www.netsmartz.org/scouting to review the requirements.  Once you have completed the Read, Write and Watch requirements, please see Scoutmaster Flaherty to schedule the Teach and Talk requirements.  We have the Cards.  The chip expires after one year, see Scoutmaster Flaherty to “Recharge” or renew the Chip.

CAMPOUT:

  • WATERFALL GLEN November 10-12 including the five mile hike, orienteering, and cooking merit badge requirements.  Sign up closes on November 1 and all campers and cooking MB scouts are Required to be at the meeting on Thursday Nov. 2.

Patrol Leaders Council Meeting Tuesday 6:00 pm

Reminder that the PLC will meet on Tuesday evening at 6:00 pm in the Social Hall to plan the scout meetings for the next month and the Friday Scout Cabin meeting.  All Patrol Leaders are required to attend!!

Last camping outing for the fall – Waterfall Glen – Nov. 10-12, 2017

Greetings Scouts,

Troop 24 is planning a fun filled and productive weekend camp out to Waterfall Glen in Lemont, IL from Friday, November 10th to Sunday, November 12th, 2017.  The weekend will include a five mile hike using a map and compass to complete Second Class Req. 3b on Saturday morning and a one mile orienteering course to complete First Class Req. 4a on Saturday afternoon.  This is the only opportunity to complete these two requirements with Troop 24.  We will also complete Cooking Merit Badge Req. 6.  And, as a friendly reminder, scouts need 20 nights of camping to complete the Camping Merit Badge.  This will be our last campout until March, 2018!!

Don’t miss this one and only annual opportunity to complete these rank advancement requirements and have a great time doing so!!!

Logistics:

  • Scouts signed up for this outing should be dropped off at RPC at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 10th, 2017. We will return late morning on Sunday Nov. 12th.
  • Signup DEADLINE is Wednesday, November 1st, 2017.
  • The Scout cost for this outing is $35.
  • All Scouts must bring their books and wear their Class A uniform while traveling.
  • An email confirming participation, communicating packing list and providing an update on the weekend weather will be sent to all scouts a few days prior to the outing.
  • Please fill out an individual form for each scout and each leader/chaperone.

Find Your Way to Thursday’s Troop 24 Meeting

OCTOBER THEME:  CAMPING/COOKING/HIKING

We begin our section on Navigation in preparation of the November campout at Waterfall Glen including the 5-mile hike and orienteering course.

Help Needed on Saturday:  For all those that are Not going on the Warren Dunes Campout, the Riverside Juniors are holding a fundraiser at the Scout Cabin on Saturday from 3-7pm and would like some help running their campfire and s’mores station.  The Riverside Juniors are a big proponent of Scouting and have sponsored many of our Troop 24 Eagle Scout Projects.  This is a great opportunity for Troop 24 to both return the favor and help an organization that will likely help you on your Eagle Project.  Contact Lindsay Truesdale lindsayandalantruesdale@gmail.com or Kim Cimino at ciminokl@comcast.net
