Holiday Stroll – Friday, December 6, 2019

Scouts & adults are needed for our annual s’mores tent at Riverside’s Holiday Stroll Friday, December 6. We provide ingredients and a campfire to roast marshmallows and make s’mores. We do not charge for the s’mores, but collect a free-will offering that will go to the Riverside Presbyterian Church mission ministries. Because the donations collected will go to help those in need, service hours will be given. We will be located at Riverside Garage, always a popular location due to their train set-up. One-hour shifts are available starting at 5:00 p.m. We need two adults and three or four scouts per shift.

Reminder – Please pay your 2020 Scout Dues Now!

Reminder – it is time to renew your BSA scout membership. The cost for 2020 is $90 per scout. The increased amount is a result of higher fees our troop must pay per member to the BSA National and Council Offices. Please pay online as soon as possible. If you are unsure if you paid already, you can check our Upcoming Events page for your name.

In the past Troop 24 has subsidized the cost of BSA dues for our adult volunteer leaders. A fee is required for each member, including our Scoutmaster, Assistant Scoutmasters and Troop Committee Members. This is a considerable cost to the troop. Please consider making a donation to our troop, so we can continue to subsidize our leaders who volunteer so much of their time. Thank you for your support of Troop 24!

Troop Meeting – November 14th

This week, we will share our thoughts about last week’s Village Hall meeting [continues our work on the Eagle-required Citizenship in the Community Req #3b], and prepare for the November 21st architecture hike – a tour of Riverside landmarks.

ALL SCOUTS who attended last week’s meeting should be ready to speak briefly on the topic below.

“Choose one of the issues discussed at the meeting where a difference of opinions was expressed, and explain to your counselor [i.e. Troop] why you agree with one opinion more than you do another one.”

While we’re enjoying our meeting, there will be a Handbook-to-“Scoutbook” reconciliation so that our on-line computerized rank advancement application is current.  SO … BRING YOUR HANDBOOK!

All of this followed by a rousing game of architectural “IN THE NOT SEAT” !

FLAGS: Iceberg Lettuce

1,000 Trees Service Project – Saturday, November 23rd

Troop 24 will participate in Riverside’s annual 1,000 Trees Planting Project – Saturday, November 23 from 10:00 a.m. – about 3:00 p.m. Volunteers should meet at the Riverside Scout Cabin for an information session on how to plant tree seeds. Following the training, volunteers are divided into teams to plant previously collected tree seeds in the village’s natural areas along the Des Plaines River. When the teams are done, they can report to the Scout Cabin to return their tools and enjoy soup, chili and hot cocoa by the warm indoor fireplace. This reforestation effort will be fun, rewarding and easy, and this project will earn scouts conservation service hours needed for rank advancement. Participants should wear warm clothes, gloves, boots and a hat, or whatever outerwear is appropriate for the day’s weather. Scouts do not need to commit to the entire time period to participate.
