Scouts Raft the Pigeon River

Wednesday’s whitewater adventure was the Pigeon River, with Class 3 and Class 4 rapids. For anyone unfamiliar with river ratings, see Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Scale_of_River_Difficulty. On Thursday and Friday they will travel to Georgia and S. Carolina with even bigger whitewater than they have experienced so far. More photos have been uploaded to our Photo Gallery at http://troop24riverside.com/troop-scrapbook/nggallery/2014/whitewater-camp-daniel-boone-2014

Scout Rafting Update

On Tuesday our scouts rafted on the French Broad River. In the afternoon they went into the mountains and swam by a waterfall. There is no cell phone coverage at camp so we’ve received limited text messages with a few pictures, but everything is going well, and the boys are worn out by the end of the day. NO mosquitoes.

Whitewater Update

Troop 24 scouts tamed the Nantahala River, hiked a segment of the Appalachian Trail, and worked up a big appetite at Camp Daniel Boone. Several photos are available at:

Scouts Arrived at Camp Daniel Boone

Camp-Daniel-Boone

Our scouts on the Whitewater trip arrived safely around 2:00 p.m. on Sunday. Camp Daniel Boone, near Asheville, North Carolina, is beautiful with a great lake and a creek running alongside the campsite. Scout tents were already set up at the site with wood floors and two cots per tent. There is no cell service at their remote site, so we may not be getting further updates.

At least we know one fish was caught, giving hope to those scouts taking the Fishing Merit badge class.

Four of our scouts are taking classes for Scuba certification. Over the past several years we’ve had over a dozen scouts become Open Water Diver certified, and this year two of our scouts are going for Advanced Open Water Diver. Parents of scouts: If your son has ever expressed an interest in diving, this is the best and cheapest way to become certified. Adult leaders can take the class too!
