Klondike Derby – Saturday, January 25, 2020

Troop 24 will be entering the Voyageur Trace Klondike Derby at Bemis Woods South on Saturday, January 25, 2020. Scouts will meet at Riverside Presbyterian Church at 7:30 a.m. and return the same day at approximately 3:00 p.m.

We will form our annual Lost Boy Patrol of 8 scouts to take the Troop 24 sled through a course of Scout Craft activities and compete in the VT Iditarod Sled Race in the afternoon. The Lost Boy patrol will meet during the Thursday meetings in January to prepare for the race, review their scout skills, and get the sled ready to fly! All Klondike Derby activities will be outside, so scouts should dress appropriately for the weather.

The cost of this outing will be $10.00 and a can of non-cream soup (to be dumped into the “Klondike Kettle”). Scouts should also bring a sack lunch/snack to accompany the soup, a water bottle/canteen for the trail, and a lot of enthusiasm to bring home the Gold!

We are in need of leaders and drivers. Since this outing is close, drivers do not need to stay. Adults are welcome to stay and participate. Council is looking for adult volunteers for stations at the Klondike Derby. Contact Carrie Staubus at committeechair@troop24riverside.com with questions or to volunteer.

2020 Summer High Adventure Trip

The 2020 Summer High Adventure will be a backpacking trek around Isle Royale in northern Minnesota.

Participant requirements are 14 years old or graduated 8th grade and have earned the rank of First Class or above by March 1, 2020.

We have made special arrangements with Camp Tesomas to offer this trek because it is our scouts’ #1 choice. The trek will be either the week before our summer camp or the week after. The dates are July 6-11 or July 19-25. The cost will be around $750 for each scout. We do not anticipate the need for adult leaders.

Crew sizes are limited to 7 each. Interested scouts need to make a $50.00 deposit and choose a preferred week. If we receive more than 7 deposits we will form a waiting list and another crew if possible.

Crew positions will be awarded by order of deposits received.

Troop Meeting – December 12th

Handbooks and Instruments and Brooms,  OH MY!!!

This week we will continue our pursuit of rank requirements so we can all try to “rank up” for the Spring Court of Honor.  This will include completing requirements where possible, and setting goals for those requirements that need to be completed outdoors or at home. SCOUTMASTER CONFERENCES and BOARDS OF REVIEW are available. So, BRING YOUR HANDBOOKS!

Those of you who would like to make an instrumental contribution to next week’s caroling, bring it along!  We know many of you are in band, so don’t be shy. All instruments welcome!

Your contribution can be as modest as “sounding” the carol’s melody before the singers begin … to playing along during the entire song.  And of course, you can select carols that are familiar to you – and even decide the key! So, BRING YOUR INSTRUMENTS!

We’ll conclude with a rousing game of broomball, in anticipation of more authentic broomball on the snow next month as part of our Sports theme.  Click here for more information about broomball. So, BRING A BROOM!
