Scout Sunday on February 3

Riverside Presbyterian Church, our charter organization since 1939, invites you to attend RPC on Scout Sunday, February 3. RPC’s service begins at 10:00 a.m. with Coffee Fellowship to follow in the Social Hall.

The Boy Scouts of America annually celebrates its founding on February 8, 1910, based on the program started by Lord Baden Powell in England in 1907. Scout Sunday was added to the Scout celebration in the middle 1940s. Scout Sunday is always the Sunday preceding February 8. The Scout Sunday tradition was started to make people in houses of worship aware of Scouting, and to allow Scouts to live out their “Duty to God” pledged each week. The Scout Law says that a “Scout is Reverent” and the Scouts of all ages promise to do their “Duty to God”.

Scout families who would like to provide treats for the coffee hour after the service are invited to drop them off in the Social Hall kitchen of the church any time between 9:00 and 10:45 am. Thanks for your contributions & hope to see you there!

After a short lecture on breathing, clearing the mask, kicking and buoyancy, scouts will go into the  pool where they’ll practice what they’ve  learned.  Then they will practice some skills like flood and clear their mask, take their regulator out and blow bubbles and inflate and deflate your BCD.  Then it’s fun time to swim around the pool and go underwater on scuba gear.  Scouts can dive through hula hoops, play underwater torpedoes or put puzzles together.

Scouts sign up here.

We need leaders and drivers, if interested please sign up here.

If you have any questions contact Joan Janopoulos.

January Troop Meetings

Scouts will be working on rank advancement requirements at tonight’s meeting. This includes some of our higher ranking scouts who need to teach something using the EDGE method, as well as younger scouts working toward the lower ranks. We will also be working in the attic taking inventory for the Pancake Breakfast, and checking out our Klondike Derby sleds.

Next week (January 24) we will hold Boards of Review. Please let Nancy Hopkins know of scouts who are ready for a Board.

Also next week, Mrs. Lulich will be available to assist scouts in completing the requirements for the Citizenship in the Nation Merit Badge. Please be aware that your scout may believe he has completed all the requirements, but some of these had to be done outside of class and have not been turned in.

Requirements 8 is: Name your two senators and the member of Congress from your congressional district. Write a letter about a national issue and send it to one of these elected officials, sharing your view with him or her. Show your letter and any response you receive to your counselor. The letter MUST be brought to this meeting.

Also, Requirement 6 MUST be completed, which requires the scout to prepare IN ADVANCE. With your counselor’s approval, choose a speech of national historical importance. Find out about the author, and tell your counselor about the person who gave the speech. Explain the importance of the speech at the time it was given, and tell how it applies to American citizens today. Choose a sentence or two from the speech that has significant meaning to you, and tell your counselor why.

February 2 – TWO Outings

Scouts have the choice of two outings on Saturday, February 2. The first is a service outing to Feed Our Starving Children. This was a very popular outing with our scouts last year, and is for a very good cause. This outing is limited to 25 scouts. There is no cost, and scouts will receive 2 hours of service credit.

The second outing is the annual Klondike Derby, sponsored by the Des Plaines Valley Council, Voyageur Trace District. The cost is $8 per scout.

Both of these are day outings, and we will need leaders/drivers for both events.
