Adult Training

Every scout deserves a trained leader. . . and there are several places to receive this training.

Online Training
The Boys Scouts of America have an online Learning Center. Classes available online include:

  • Cub Scout Leader Fast Start
  • Youth Protection Training
  • Venturing Advisor Fast Start
  • Boy Scout Leader Fast Start
  • Troop Committee Challenge
  • Aquatics Safety (Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat)
  • Venturing Crew Orientation

To take training online you should first register for a Troop position. To take the online training be sure you have your membership number to ensure that your training is recorded by the BSA. (Please let the Troop Committee Chairman know if you have completed training.)

Boy Scout Specific Training
New Leader Essentials is the same course for Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts and does not need to be repeated if you are transferring from the Pack to the Troop. To be considered fully trained, boy scout leaders should take:

Youth Protection Training
Youth Protection training should be renewed every two years. Local and national tour permit applications require Youth Protection training for at least one of the adults who will accompany the scouts. The national tour permit requires all registered adults to have Youth Protection training to participate in a nationally sponsored event or activity. (National tour permits are required on all scouting tours or trips that are 500 or more miles one-way. The local council establishes the requirements for local tour permits, which are required on all Scouting tours or trips that are shorter than 500 miles.)

In-Person Training
Every BSA Council offers training for leaders. Although Troop 24 belongs to the Des Plaines Valley Council you may take training through any local council. For training schedules for the nearest Councils, please visit:
