Philmont 2019

Philmont backpacking – June 12 to June 24, 2019

Philmont…Scouting’s Premier High Adventure! The Pinnacle. Yes, whitewater rafting is first this summer but now is the time we must commit to Philmont for summer 2019. We have been awarded a trek through the Philmont lottery system for the ultimate adventure next summer, June 12 to June 24, 2019. This is such a highly sought after high adventure that scouts from around the world regard it as the most satisfying and memorable time of their scouting days. It is extraordinarily special! The history is unsurpassed, the scenery is spectacular, and the challenges build on that unique scout character. However, we must now make a deposit of $100 per scout and $100 per leader to reserve our trek otherwise we will forfeit our spot. The total fee will be $970 for the 12 day trek; plus a cost for transportation. In order to participate, the Scout must be at least First Class rank; 14 years of age OR 13 years of age and an 8th grade graduate by June 12, 2019.

We will have an initial scout and parent meeting Wednesday, April 4th at 7pm at the Riverside Presbyterian Church Social Hall. In the meantime, please check out the Philmont website and make your deposits by April 10th. Troop contact is Bruce Robertson: brobertson5152@aol.com

***REGISTRATION IS FULL FOR BOTH SCOUTS AND ADULTS***
Anyone who registers will be placed on a wait list.

High Adventure 2013

Mark your calendars for an informational meeting (parents & scouts) to discuss our High Adventure options for the summer of 2013. We were successful in getting a reservation for a Philmont trek for the summer of 2013 (departing July 5 and returning on July 19). Scouts must be 14 years old or age 13 and have graduated from 8th grade to participate in a Philmont experience (our current 7th graders and older). There is also a possibility for a scuba experience at Florida Seabase. Those who are interested in either outing should attend an informational meeting on Monday, February 6, at 7:00 p.m. in the Social Hall at RPC.

Philmont Training Hike – June 24-26

Philmont scouts will be camping at Starved Rock State Park this weekend. Please be at Riverside Presbyterian Church at 6:30 p.m., we will return on Sunday, mid-afternoon.

This is our final dress rehearsal for Philmont so please have ALL your gear. Each person will be carrying their own food so remember to bring a bag large enough to hold your food in your back pack.

We can not locate the pump water purifier. This was carried, but not used on our Kettle Moraine trip. It is in a black nylon carrying case. Please contact me if you have this equipment.

The cost of this camp out will be $35 per person.

Please complete the permission form here: http://troop24riverside.com/2011/06/philmont-training-hike-form/

Medical Forms Needed for All Summer Campers

It’s that time of year again…ALL scouts AND adults going to any of our summer camps need to turn in a new medical form, signed by a physician. This includes our new scouts, who–you may be thinking–just turned in forms, but those forms included only the parent portion.

BSA has made it slightly easier by combining all types of forms into one online form. You can enter your information online, save it, and print a copy to take to your son’s doctor. The revised forms have 4 parts:

A & B – To be filled out by a parent
C – To be completed by the physician for ANY summer camp
D – To be given to your physician for High Adventure camps (Philmont, Seabase, Northern Tier)

Make your doctors’ appointments now. We have NO flexibility on the medical forms. We are required to turn in the forms on our arrival at camp. Scouts whose families decline immunizations must complete a BSA release form.

If your son is definitely not going to summer camp, we will ask for an updated medical from (Parts A & B) in the fall when school starts.

We have 2 leaders who have committed to attend with the non-Philmont scouts. The forecast for Saturday is a high of 32 degrees, cloudy, and a chance of snow flurries. This outing is required for Philmont scouts. Younger scouts will be able to complete Second Class requirement (1b) of a 5-mile hike using a compass and map.
