Klondike Derby – February 2, 2013

The Des Plaines Valley Council/Voyageur Trace annual Klondike Derby takes place on Saturday, February 2. Scouts will meet at RPC at 7:15 a.m. and return the same day at approximately 4:00 p.m.

The event is modeled on the heritage of the Klondike Gold Rush. Troops have been running Klondike derbies since 1949. The event varies by district, but the typical Klondike derby consists of 10 stations where patrols/units must test their Scoutcraft skills and their leadership abilities, earning points towards a total score. The unit must transport their gear on a homemade sled and pulled by the Scouts. (The Troop has the sled. The event will probably be held, even if we have no snow.)

The cost will be $8 and a can of non-cream soup (to be dumped into a communal pot for “garbage can soup”). Scouts should also bring a sack lunch to accompany the soup. Dress appropriately for the weather.

We will also need drivers. Since this outing is close, drivers do not need to stay. Adults are welcome to stay and participate, or drop-off and come back for the trip home. If you would like to participate, please register and pay for yourself separately from your son.

Please remember: you must register on the Troop online form AND pay (preferably using the online WePay system). If your son is not registered he will not show up on the roster. The deadline to register for this outing is Wednesday,

Back By Popular Demand – Feed My Starving Children Outing – Sat. Feb 2

Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) is a non-profit Christian organization committed to feeding children hungry in body and spirit.  The approach is simple: children and adult volunteers hand pack meals specifically formulated for malnourished children, and Christian and humanitarian relief organizations partner with FMSC to deliver the food to children around the world.

Sign up AGAIN for Pinewood Derby Help

Due to a problem with the sign-up form, no names were collected when a scout signed up to help with the Pinewood Derby. Five scouts have already signed up, but we don’t know who they are! Please sign up again, even if you know you’ve already done so. If we end up with duplicate entries, that’s not a problem. Thanks, and sorry for the problem.
