Summer Plans

We have 67 (non-senior) scouts in Troop 24. 47 are signed up for one or more of our summer events: Seabase, Tesomas, Porcupine Mountains. It is not too late to sign up for Tesomas, and we encourage you to do so. The majority of our new scouts are going to Tesomas, and we hope the remaining new scouts will sign up! If you’re unsure, please plan to attend the camp meeting next Thursday, May 21, in the RPC Social Hall. We also need leaders for Camp Tesomas.

Camp Tesomas Leader Form 2015

Ax Yard – Wednesday, May 13

Several of the Second Class requirements involve the use and care of sharp tools. These are not requirements that can be completed at a regular meeting, so we have scheduled an “Ax Yard” (or Axe Yard). All scouts who have not yet completed Second Class requirements 3c, 3d, and 3e, are invited to the Janopoulos home (yard, actually) on Wednesday, MAY 13, at 6:00 p.m. The requirements that are not completed on Wednesday will be finished at the Troop meeting on MAY 14.

Please check your scout books and see if you need these requirements. Any scout who is lacking these requirements is invited, including the first-year scouts. Don’t forget to bring your books to 360 Nuttall Road in Riverside on Wednesday.

3c. Demonstrate proper care, sharpening, and use of the knife, saw, and ax, and describe when they should be used.

3d. Use the tools listed in requirement 3c to prepare tinder, kindling, and fuel for a cooking fire.

3e. Explain when it is appropriate to use a cooking fire. At an approved outdoor location and at an approved time, and using the tinder, kindling, and fuel wood from requirement 3d, demonstrate how to build a fire; light the fire, unless prohibited by local fire restrictions. After allowing the flames to burn safely for at least two minutes, safely extinguish the flames with minimal impact to the fire site.

Camp Tesomas Meeting May 21

Our annual parent/new scout meeting for summer camp will be held on Thursday, May 21, at 7:15 p.m. in the Social Hall at RPC. It is very important that at least one parent of each scout going to Tesomas for the first time attend this meeting (including older scouts who have not gone to summer camp in the past).

Boards of Review/Court of Honor

Our spring Court of Honor will be held on Thursday, May 28. All scouts and at least one parent/scout should plan to attend. (Other guests are welcome–siblings, grandparents, etc.)

We will hold Boards of Review next Thursday, May 14. Please sign up online if you need a Scoutmaster Conference or a Board of Review.

Reminder: Eagle COH TODAY

All scouts and parents are encouraged to attend the Eagle Court of Honor to honor these scouts who have achieved scouting’s highest rank: Joe Jones, Cody Lanken & Jack Lennon. Due to a conflict at RPC on Sunday, this ceremony will take place in the sanctuary at Ascension Lutheran Church, 400 Nuttall Road, Riverside at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 3. Scouts who are involved in the ceremony should be there at 2:15. Please contact Sue Jones with any questions.
