Camp Sullivan – Register by March 11!

Calling all Scouts, Leaders & Parent Chaperones!

Don’t miss your chance to see tanks, finish rank advancements, and hang out with your fellow Scouts this weekend!

Registration closes TODAY so SIGN UP NOW!

This is the perfect trip for our new First Year Scouts to get a night of camping under their belt in nearby Wheaton, IL. Not only will they get to hang out with other first years, they will receive personalized training from Troop 24’s Instructors, Guides, Asst. Patrol Leader, and Senior Patrol Leader. The cost for this campout is $35.00

First Year Scouts will leave RPC Saturday (3/16) at 8:30am and return to RPC Sunday (3/17) at 10:30am. First Year Scouts should register HERE.

Second Year Scouts and above will spend Friday night working on rank advancement requirements that can only be completed on a campout like acting as Patrol cook, starting a fire, setting up a stove, and more. The cost for this campout is $40.00.

Second Year Scouts & above will leave RPC Friday 3/15 at 4:30pm and return to RPC Saturday 3/16 at 10:30am. Second Year Scouts should register HERE.

Campouts like this would be impossible without our fearless leaders and parent chaperones! We still need drivers and parent chaperones so please sign up today.

When you sign up you can let us know how you would like to help. Whether you’re a driver only, a parent chaperone who camps overnight with the troop, or you’re a registered leader who can spend the whole weekend, we greatly appreciate your help!

Reminder to new Crossover Families

Troop 24 requires that your son camp overnight with the Troop before attending Tesomas summer camp [which will be a highlight of their summer!].

This helps them become comfortable with overnight camping away from the family.

The March Cantigny camp-out is a good first opportunity, since they’ll get to spend time with one another and with the Troop [youth] Instructors and some of the adult leaders, and it’s only one night of camping.

April [climbing], May [horse-back riding] and June [cycling] will also give your sons opportunities, but if they’re free for Cantigny, give it some thought!

Finally, remember to include the required BSA Medical Forms if you haven’t furnished them yet to the Troop.

Skating Merit Badge

We will soon be offering the opportunity for our troop members to work on the Skating Merit Badge (ice skating option), led by Mr. Robertson. You can read more about the requirements for this merit badge here.

Since our new Boy Scouts will be focusing on achieving Scout Rank during the next few meetings, you should only sign up for this merit badge if you have already made Scout Rank. We will discuss Skating merit badge requirements during troop meetings, then plan an outing to a local rink. Skate rentals will be available for scouts who do not have their own skates.

Sign up to let us know if you are interested in participating:

Earn the Cyber Chip

Earning the Cyber Chip will help scouts learn how to stay safe while they are online and using social networks and electronic forms of communication. Topics include cell phone use, texting, blogging, gaming, cyberbullying and identity theft.

Scouts need to earn the Cyber Chip in order to make Scout rank and Star rank. A current Cyber Chip is also required for several merit badges. Go to http://www.netsmartz.org/scouting to review the requirements. Once you have completed the Read, Write and Watch requirements, please sign up for a Cyber Chip Meeting on the Troop 24 website to let us know your scout is ready to complete the Teach and Talk requirements. We have the Cards. The chip expires after one year, see Scoutmaster Tim Lauger to “Recharge” or renew the Chip.

Pancake Breakfast Ticket Money

There are a few scouts who still have not turned in their Pancake Breakfast ticket money. Tickets sales were mandatory for all Troop 24 Boy Scouts. We need all scouts to make sure their $75 has been turned in no later than this Thursday. You may bring the ticket money to the Troop meeting or to Nina Henderson at 216 Olmsted Road in Riverside. Place the money (check or cash) in an envelope marked with “Pancake Breakfast Money” and your name.
Thank you!

Troop Meeting – Thursday, March 7

Welcome to the new Crossovers, including Ryan’s, Hunter’s, and Carter’s brothers!

Welcome Andres B, Jonah B, Colin C, Lucas C, Kyle E, R.J. I, Kyle K, Zachary K, Miles O, Cooper S, James S, Luke S, and Aiden V.

On Thursday, Troop 24 and its new youth leadership – Liam C and Nate G – will welcome the new crossovers at our troop meeting – which will start promptly at 7 pm in the gym at Riverside Presbyterian Church.

Patrols will have the opportunity to decide on whether to keep their current name [Bandits/Iceberg/Nuclear Octopi/Spartans/24th Garrison/Zulu + Alpha/Delta/Bravo for the Crossovers] … or … think up a new one that reflects the personality of their patrol.

If you decide on a new name, then a new flag is in order, so you can begin drafting your concept for your flag. Perhaps there’s an artist in your Patrol!

Where Scout skills are concerned, we will devote the month of March to rope-work, in preparation for warmer weather and Spring camp-outs.

Crossovers: whipping/fusing ropes/lines
Scout-to-Second Class: Knot-work [square/two-half-hitches/taut-line hitch/sheet bend/bowline]
First Class: Lashings [shear/square/diagonal] & Hitches [clove/timber]
Star & Above: Advanced rope-work: use lashings, knots and hitches to devise a useful camp-site tool.

Finally, we’ll begin our MARCH ROUND ROBIN DODGE-BALL ELIMINATION TOURNAMENT!

Sign-up for the Cantigny camp-out is available!
Friday night: Troop 24 Scouts, excluding Cross-overs
Saturday night: Crossovers + Troop Instructors only

All Crossovers required to camp once before Tesomas Summer Camp.

BRING YOUR HANDBOOK TO ALL MEETINGS TO HAVE REQUIREMENTS SIGNED OFF WHEN YOU COMPLETE THEM! Crossover scouts will receive their handbook at the meeting.

PARENTS OF NEW SCOUTS – An information meeting will be held at the same time as this troop meeting in the Social Hall of Riverside Presbyterian Church. Please attend and bring the forms which you received by email and checks for joiner fees ($40).
