Bus to Camp Mach

We will have a bus going to Camp Owasippe this summer. The cost of the bus will be the same as last year ($100). Payments can be turned in at the Troop meeting tonight, with checks made out to Troop 24, or dropped off to Nancy Hopkins. (e-mail Nancy if you don’t know the address.)

Camp Owasippe Registration Due Tonight

Just a reminder: Summer camp registration forms and payment are due today, Thursday, May 17. You can turn them in at the Troop Meeting or drop them off to Nancy (e-mail if you don’t know the address). Medical forms and equine waivers can be turned in later, but we need the permission form and payment ($265 made out to Troop24) today.

Reminder: Summer Camp Meeting TONIGHT, May 17

Just a reminder – our meeting to discuss summer camp logistics is tonight, May 17, at 7:00 p.m. in the RPC Social Hall. All summer campers are required to come, and for first-year campers, a parent should attend as well. If you or your scout are still unsure about summer camp, this is the time to find out more about camp. If you have the Owasippe packet that was distributed earlier in the year, please bring it. If not, paperwork will be available at the meeting. Payment for camp ($265) is due no later than Thursday.

Summer Camp Meeting May 17

There will be a meeting for all scouts who will be attending summer camp at Owasippe on Monday, May 17, at 7:00 p.m., in the RPC Social Hall. The meeting on May 17 is mandatory for all campers. A parent should also attend for first-year campers. At this meeting we will review and finalize merit badge selections and go over expectations and logistics.

The cost for summer camp is $265, with payment and the permission slip due by May 20.

Summer Camp Survey – 35 (?) Scouts Going to Camp

Thanks to everyone who responded to our survey about summer camp plans. The results were:
30 Yes
15 No
6 Undecided
18 NO RESPONSE

If you were one of the 18 “No Response” families, you can still let us know your plans by e-mail to Nancy Hopkins.

Thanks to your responses we have an idea of the number of scouts who will need transportation to Owasippe. You still need to officially register your scout and pay for camp, as the Troop needs to send our payment to the Chicago Area Council before the end of May. Summer camp registration forms and payment ($265 made out to Troop 24) are due by May 20. Bring the form to a troop meeting, or drop it off to Nancy Hopkins.

Deadline for Summer Camp Registration May 20

The last date to turn in registration forms for summer camp at Owasippe (July 4-10) will be Thursday, May 20. So far, we have 28 boys who have indicated that they will be attending summer camp. Based on those numbers we will be working on getting a bus to transport our scouts. Our earlier Feedblitz did not include a registration form. You can download it here:
Owasippe Registration Form

The form should be accompanied by a check for $265 made out to Troop 24. Additional fees may be required, depending on which activities your scout(s) sign up for. Those payments can be made later, and more information will be forthcoming. Forms with checks attached can be turned in at the Troop meetings, or dropped off to Nancy Hopkins. (Slide it through the mailbox that goes into the house.)

More information about Owasippe can be found here:
Owasippe Welcome Packet

All scouts attending summer camp must submit a medical form, which must be signed by a doctor. Also required is a copy of the parent(s)’ insurance card, both front and back. BSA Medical Forms are good for 12 months, so most of those turned in for camp last year will expire before this year’s camp begins. Please make your appointment for a physical now! The Chicago Council, which sponsors Owasippe, uses a modified version of the national BSA form. Please do NOT print a medical form from the Des Plaines Valley Council or the national BSA websites. You MUST use this form:

A separate waiver is required for horseback riding. If you’re not sure whether your scout will participate in horseback riding, please just fill it out and turn it in to be safe.

Summer Camp July 4-July 10

Summer Camp for Troop 24 will be at Camp Wolverine on the Owasippe Scout Reservation in Twin Lake, Michigan, a four-hour drive from Riverside. We will NOT be attending our regularly visited Boy Scout Camp, Camp Mach Kin O’Siew (affectionately known as “Camp Mach”) this year due to schedules and availability of leaders.

Camp Wolverine is similar to Camp Mach in that it offers a merit badge program and the week-long camp experience. It differs in that the boys do not cook every meal, it is more spread out geographically, and there are more Outpost activities. The Owasippe Scout Reservation also offers a family campground area, known as the Reneker Family Camp, where a boy’s family can camp that week, be nearby and experience much the same surroundings that their son experiences. (Camp Reneker Family Camp reservations will be up to the family of the Scout.)

The price for summer camp is $265/boy ($145/adult leader) plus Merit Badge and Outpost fees. The amount of the additional fees depends on which activities the scout selects (varying form $20 to $40/activity).
