Bike Inspection and Ax Yard

Bike inspection for camp will take place Tuesday, July 6th, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Schrier’s house at 375 Uvedale in Riverside.

We don’t want scouts to get to camp and have problems with their bikes, so please attend or have a family member bring your bike if you have a conflict. If you know that your bicycle needs repair you will need to bring the needed parts with you and we will repair the bike if possible.

An Ax Yard will teach scouts how to safely use knives and axes. Scouts who participate will earn the “Totin’ Chip” which is required to possess or purchase a pocket knife at camp (mandatory for the Woodcarving Merit Badge).

Those Scouts currently signed up for Woodcarving include:

Jacob J, Ryan E, Aiden V, Mateo C, Lucas C, David V, Lucas W, Lincoln R, Max S

Troop Equipment Check -Tuesday at 6:30 pm

Scouts and leaders are requested to attend our Troop equipment check on Tuesday, June 29 at 6:30 pm at Riverside Presbyterian Church driveway and lawn. We will be checking over tents and other equipment to prepare for our week of summer camp. In the event of rain on Tuesday evening, we will announce a new date.

Last chance for swim tests! If you have not yet completed your swim test for summer camp or high adventure camp, please attend the last test at the Berwyn Pav YMCA Tuesday, June 29 at 7:45 pm. Sign up HERE.

Swim Tests for Summer Camp and High Adventure Trip

Reminder: All scouts attending summer camp at Tesomas and adults attending Tesomas who intend to boat or swim should plan to take the Boy Scout swim test. The swim test is required every year, not just for new scouts. Everyone who intends to swim or boat must take the test. Scouts attending the Boundary Waters canoeing trip should also take the swim test now.

The swim test will be offered for Troop 24 members at the Pav YMCA (in Berwyn) on the following dates:

Sunday, June 27th at 3:00 pm – sign up HERE
Tuesday, June 29th at 7:45 pm – sign up HERE

Scouts will need to bring swim trunks, swim goggles (recommended) and a towel. There is no fee for the Swim Test and you will not need to purchase a YMCA guest pass.

If you do not attend one of these test dates, you will be asked to take the test upon arrival at Camp Tesomas or you will be designated a non-swimmer.

Summer Camp at Camp Tesomas – July 12-18, 2020

It’s time to register for Troop 24 Summer Camp!!

Troop 24′s annual summer camp will be at Camp Tesomas, north of Rhinelander, Wisconsin (about 6 hours from Riverside). The dates for this year’s camp are July 12-18, 2020. Camp Tesomas has recently announced that they DO plan to run summer camp starting July 5. More information about the camp is available here: http://www.campingisking.com/camps/tesomas/66758

Camp Tesomas will be run with modifications to follow social distancing guidelines and requirements. BSA is allowing one scout per tent for this summer, or tent sharing for family members. A rotational plan of activities will be used to avoid large group interaction. We will eat at the campsite rather than at the dining hall. We plan to travel to camp by leader cars this year, rather than take the bus. Bikes will not be used at camp this year. Scouts will not pre-register for merit badge classes this year, as the focus of camp will be scouting experiences rather than merit badge completion.

The cost for camp is $310. Because many scouts have popcorn credits, the camp fee will be paid by check made out to Troop 24. Checks can be turned in to Troop Committee Chair Carrie Staubus. Once you register, you will receive drop off information. Scouts with popcorn credit will receive an e-mail with the amount. If it will be a hardship to pay everything at once, you can pay $150 now, with the remainder due by June 1.

All scouts will need an updated BSA medical form, signed by a physician (Part C) prior to going to camp. Please make your doctors’ appointments soon. The form that you need to take to your physician can be downloaded here:
https://filestore.scouting.org/filestore/HealthSafety/pdf/680-001_ABC.pdf

Please don’t wait until the last minute to register! Register for camp here: Camp Tesomas 2020 Scout Registration Please register and turn in your money by May 20 so we know who will be attending for planning purposes!

Adults planning to attend Camp Tesomas, register here: Camp Tesomas 2020 Adult Registration

General questions about camp can be directed to our Summer Camp Coordinator, Carolyn Lach at clach@northpark.edu

Summer Camp 2020

Troop 24 has reservations to attend Camp Tesomas July 12-18, 2020. Currently, Camp Tesomas staff is planning to hold summer camp in 2020 if they are allowed by state guidelines and regulations regarding COVID-19 and social distancing. However, the Centers for Disease Control and Wisconsin Department of Health have not yet decided whether summer camps will be allowed.

We are asking Troop 24 members to answer a brief survey regarding your opinion on whether the troop should attend Camp Tesomas if permitted. Please let us know your concerns in the “Comments” section of the survey.

Summer Camp 2020 Survey

Start Thinking About Summer Camp!

Troop 24 will be attending Tesomas Summer Camp July 12-18, 2020. The cost of camp will be $310 per scout, plus an additional bus fee for transportation. Sign-up on our troop website will begin in spring. For those with financial hardship, camperships are available to pay a portion of this cost. Tesomas campership applications are due April 1. Here is a link to the form that parents should submit to be considered: Samoset Campership Application. Troop 24 also has campership money available for scouts with financial hardship who participated in our troop fundraising. Contact Scoutmaster Tim Lauger for more information.

Tesomas program registration opens on March 1, and the following programs have limited enrollment. Microtrek 101 is for scouts who are 13 and 14 years of age and First Class rank (morning only, $50 additional cost). Microtrek 200 is for Scouts 15 years of age or older and First Class rank (morning or afternoon session, $65 additional cost). Microtrek 300 is for scouts who have already completed Microtrek 200 (all day program, $110 additional cost). More information will be available at troop meetings or on the Camp Tesomas website. Email our Troop Camp Coordinator Carolyn Lach ASAP at clach@northpark.edu if you want to sign up for a Microtrek program.

Four merit badge classes have limited enrollment: Climbing, Archery, Rifle Shooting and Shotgun Shooting ($25 additional fee). If you wish to participate in one of these programs, email our Troop Camp Coordinator Carolyn Lach ASAP at clach@northpark.edu. New scouts will be participating in merit badge classes and programs which do not have limited enrollment, so those families can just save the dates of July 12-18 and wait for the information meeting our troop will have later this year.

Arrival Home from Camp Tesomas

Troop 24 should arrive at the Hauser parking lot at about 4:45pm today (Saturday, July 20th).  Please be on time to pick up your scout and their gear.

Bikes have arrived already and it would be helpful if parents could pick up their scout’s bike now (starting st 1:30 pm). The bikes are also at the Hauser parking lot.

Camp Tesomas Monday

Troop 24 has had a good day, starting our merit badge claases and other programs. Scout were able to swim, bike and boat during our free time.
A storm has rolled in tonight, but we are all safe in our “storm shelter” buildings, playing cards and board games while we wait for the rain and lightning to be done.
