Merit Badge Opportunity Update

Here’s the latest news on local merit badge events. Please register directly with the following programs, and scouts must arrange their own transportation. Some of these classes take place at the same time as optional troop events, so please check our troop calendar and plan accordingly.

Building Tech! Plumbers and apprentices at Local 130 are kicking this off this program and sharing their knowledge in a hi-tech plumbing lab on Columbus Day (Oct 8th) at their new training facilities. The clinic is free, and space is limited so register now…https://scoutingevent.com/456-22844

The Naperville Park District is offering a Bird Study merit badge class on October 6 and a Weather merit badge class on November 3.

A merit badge clinic will take place at Triton College on October 27, 2018. Best class choice and price to those who register early! More info and registration here.

Three Fires Council will be offering a Chemistry merit badge October 20 at the Oakton Community College in Des Plaines. Info and registration here.

2018 Bootcamp merit badge clinic in Naperville, IL will be offering three Eagle required merit badges – Personal Management, Personal Fitness, Family Life. Scouts must attend all three dates (10/20/18, 11/17/18, 01/26/19), but do not need to sign up for all three merit badges.

Harper College in Palatine will be offering the Welding merit badge on November 3 and 10 (you must attend both days). Only one spot left, register here.

Burpee Museum in Rockford, IL is offering Indian Lore (11/17/18), Archaeology (12/01/18), Mining in Society (12/15/18) and Geology (1/5/19). Register at http://www.burpee.org/scouts/

A Merit Badge Clinic will be held Saturday November 17, 2018 – 9 am to noon at Barrington United Methodist Church. The Clinic features traditional counselor meetings for over 65 merit badges. Registration opens October 1 at this link.

Bass Pro Shops in Bolingbrook will be offering free Merit Badge Classes in September. See this link for more information and a phone number to call to reserve your scout’s spot in a class.

Rainbow Council Scout Reservation in Morris, IL will offer a Merit Badge “Clean Up Day” on August 18. Scouts can complete their shooting sports partials from camp on that day. Register here

These are individual, not troop activities, so scouts will register directly with the program and must arrange their own transportation.

Merit Badge Opportunity – Saturday, August 4

Pathway to Eagle Merit Badge University will be held in Bolingbrook on Saturday, August 4 from 9 am- 5 pm. Registration is $18/Scout. Scouts are able to sign up for 4 periods during the day (with some of the merit badges taking up 2 periods). Class A Uniforms are required. The program also offers Ice Skating on Friday Aug 2 at 6:30 pm at the Rocket Ice Arena in Bolingbrook for interested Scouts, and the option of several Friday evening merit badge classes. Troop 24 is registered and has at least two leaders attending, so scouts can register directly with the program and use our log in to identify themselves as part of our troop. Scouts must provide their own transportation or set up carpool themselves for this event.

Swimming Merit Badge at the Pav YMCA – July 6

The Pav YMCA in Berwyn will be offering the Swimming Merit Badge class for our troop on Friday, July 6th from 6pm to 8pm. The class will be held at the swimming pool at 2947 S. Oak Park Avenue in Berwyn. The Swimming Merit badge is required for any scout to participate in other water activities such as scout boating outings. Scouts will need to bring the $20 class fee, a blue card, swim trunks and a towel to this class.

Here is some information about upcoming local merit badge class opportunities. We will not be participating as a troop, so scouts who register will need to arrange their own transportation.

Three Fires Merit Badge Academy – Saturday, February 17, 2018
Takes place at York High School in Elmhurst. Over 90 Merit Badges offered plus training classes for adults. Please note that the troop has a skiing overnight planned for this date. Register here

Cook Your Way to the Cooking Merit Badge

The Troop 24 Cooking Merit Badge counselor will meet with scouts who have completed Requirement 6 of the Cooking Merit Badge at the Thursday meeting on Nov 2 and the Waterfall Glen Campout.  All scouts who have previously begun the cooking merit badge should review and complete Requirement 6a-c and be prepared to discuss their work at the Thursday meeting.  On Saturday of the Waterfall Glen campout each Merit Badge scout will complete Requirement 6d-f.   Troop 24 will provide the trail stoves and each Cooking MB scout will be required to bring two meals and a snack sufficient to feed 3-5 scouts (see Req 6a & 6d).  For more information see http://meritbadge.org/wiki/index.php/Cooking
