Roller Skating Postponed to April 12

Due to lack of response, we will be postponing the skating outing originally scheduled for tomorrow. Although you can earn the Skating Merit Badge using this outing, ANYONE can come–siblings, parents, friends. This will be “open skate” at Fleetwood Roller Rink. Reminders will be sent later, but please mark the date on your calendars!

UPDATE: Skating at 1:30 on Sunday

Due to a scheduling conflict, the Skating Merit Badge will take place on Sunday at 1:30.

Mr. Robertson, a Skating Merit Badge Counselor, is willing to meet with scouts who are interested in earning the merit badge next Sunday, March 22, at Fleetwood Roller Rink (7231 S Archer, Archer & Harlem) during the open skate at 1:30 p.m. Scouts should familiarize themselves with the requirements (http://meritbadge.org/wiki/index.php/Skating). Those interested need to contact Mr. Robertson IN ADVANCE at brobertson5152@aol.com. The cost is $8 to skate and $3 for rentals. Scouts may also choose to bring their own inline skates or roller skates. Family and friends are also encouraged to attend for the fun of it.

Ice Skating on Sunday, February 15, 2015

On Sunday, February 15, we will have an informal ice skating outing. For those scouts who would like to finish the Skating Merit Badge with ice skates, and for others who would just like to go ice skating, we will meet at RPC on Sunday at 12:45. We will travel to Oak Lawn Ice Rink, 9320 South Kenton Avenue in Oak Lawn. Open Skate is from 2:00 to 3:15. Scouts interested in earning the Skating Merit Badge should familiarize themselves with the skating requirements and bring along their Blue Cards. There is no cost to the scouts, although we need those planning to attend to sign up by Friday at noon. We also need to know if you will be bringing your own skates. Scouts and leaders/drivers (those who will be skating) sign up here: http://troop24riverside.com/2015/02/ice-skating-form-2015/

Klondike Derby – “Gold in the Cold!” – February 14, 2015

Troop 24 is planning a day outing to Bemis Woods on February 14, 2015, to participate in the Voyageur Trace District’s Klondike Derby. Scouts will meet at RPC at 7:30 a.m. and return the same day at approximately 3:00 p.m.

The theme of this year’s derby is “Gold in the Cold!” Patrols will take their sled through a course of morning activities and compete in the VT Iditarod Sled Race in the afternoon.  Scouts should be prepared for fun and challenges. All activities will be outside, so scouts should dress appropriately for the weather. Last year Troop 24 took second place and was also able to showcase their awesome first aid skills!

The cost of this outing will be $10.00 and a can of non-cream soup (to be dumped into the “Klondike Kettle”). Scouts should also bring a sack lunch/snack to accompany the soup.

We will be looking for leaders and  drivers. Since this outing is close, drivers do not need to stay.  Adults are welcome to stay and participate. Space is limited for this outing.   The deadline to register  is Wednesday, February 11, 2015.  Contact Joan Janopoulos at joanj360@gmail.com with any questions.

February Troop Events

We have LOTS of events planned for the shortest month of the year!

On February 14, we have room for 10 scouts to participate in the Klondike Derby, an annual event sponsored by the Council based on the Iditarod–although with scouts pulling the sleds, rather than dogs. For scouts who don’t mind cold weather, this is a very fun event, and one that every scout should do once. For more information, or to sign up: Klondike Gold in the Cold

We have two ski trips planned, one specifically for our Star & Above scouts (intermediate skiers/no beginners), and one suitable for all ages and skill levels.

On February 21-22, Star & Above scouts will be going to Chestnut Mountain Resort in Galena. We will leave early Saturday morning, ski all day, and spend the night at the lodge (bunkbeds with up to 8 per room). Kent Johnson and Bruce Robertson will be our leaders for that event. We are limited to 15 participants (scouts & leaders both), so sign up soon! For more information, or to sign up: Chestnut Mountain

On February 28-March 1, we are sponsoring a trip to Sunburst Recreation in Wisconsin This outing is suitable for beginning skiers, as well as those who have never skied before. Lessons are available. We will leave from RPC early on Saturday, spend the day skiing, have pizza at a hotel, and return to the slopes for night-time tubing. Scouts can attend on their own or the whole family is welcome to take advantage of the group rates and join us. Families may choose to make this a day trip or stay overnight; all single scouts should plan to stay overnight. For more information, or to sign up: Sunburst

On February 22, we need 12 scouts to assist with the Pack 24 Crossover. The time involved would be approximately 2 hours (5:00 – 7:00). If you are attending the ski trip, you will have time to do both. Dinner will be provided for those boy scouts who sign up. To sign up: Crossover

Lunch will be on your own. We’ll have pizza for supper and a breakfast buffet at the resort, returning home by early afternoon on Sunday.
