Scout Sunday on February 5

Riverside Presbyterian Church, our charter organization since 1939, invites you to attend RPC on Scout Sunday, February 5. RPC’s service begins at 10:00 a.m. with Coffee Fellowship to follow in the Social Hall.

The Boy Scouts of America annually celebrates its founding on February 8, 1910, based on the program started by Lord Baden Powell in England in 1907. Scout Sunday was added to the Scout celebration in the middle 1940s. Scout Sunday is always the Sunday preceding February 8. The Scout Sunday tradition was started to make people in houses of worship aware of Scouting, and to allow Scouts to live out their “Duty to God” pledged each week. The Scout Law says that a “Scout is Reverent” and the Scouts of all ages promise to do their “Duty to God”.

Scout Sunday February 6

February 6 is Scout Sunday (the Sunday prior to February 8, which is the date of founding of the Boy Scouts of America). If you can, please join us for the 10:00 a.m. service at our charter organization, Riverside Presbyterian Church. If you can bring a baked good to share at the coffee fellowship after the service, that would be wonderful too, as the scouts are hosting the coffee hour. Please wear your uniforms. If you can’t join us at RPC, wear your uniform proudly to whatever church you attend to show the community what we mean when we say “a scout is reverent.”

Reminder: Scout Sunday February 7

Riverside Presbyterian Church, our charter organization since 1939, invites you to attend RPC on Scout Sunday, February 7. The sermon for Scout Sunday, “A Boy Scout is Brave,” is taken from Isaiah 6:1-8. How is Isaiah similar to a Boy Scout? In Scouting, kids learn new skills and are asked to try new things, including leadership positions. Isaiah speaks of feeling unsure and under-qualified to become a prophet, yet he follows God’s call anyway.

Scout Sunday February 8

Every year the Boy Scouts of America celebrate the founding of the Boys Scouts on Scout Sunday.  The tradition was started to make people more aware of scouting, and to allow scouts to live out what they pledge each week.  This  Sunday, February 8, 2009, is Scout Sunday at Riverside Presbyterian Church.  RPC is our Chartering Organization, and we operate as one of the oldest troops in the State because RPC  has supported us for 70 years.  Even if you don”™t normally attend RPC, all scouts and their families are especially invited to  the 10:00 a.m. worship service this Sunday.  Scouts should wear Class A uniforms.

If you can”™t make it, many other churches hold a Scout Sunday.  Although February 8 is officially “Scout Sunday” some churches may celebrate on a different date.  Check with your church to confirm the date.

Thanks to all the scouts and families who attended the Scout Sunday service at our charter organization, Riverside Presbyterian Church, and particularly to Max M and Casey C, the liturgists for the service. Thanks also to the parents who supplied baked goods and helped with the coffee fellowship.
