Alex C’s Eagle Project

Troop 24’s Alex C will be collecting donations and having work days for his Eagle project this week. Here is some information from Alex:
My project is planting a garden to attract hummingbirds at Patriots’ Park in Riverside.
The garden will also provide a nice view for park goers.
I will be using gladiolus, catmint, allium, hyacinth, and hydrangeas to create this garden.

Volunteers are needed to help pull up a weeds and lay down the plating soil and fertilizer. Then they will plant the bulbs and plants into the ground.

Between the date of July 22-28 I’ll be collecting donations for this project:

Donations could either be needed plants and bulbs – hydrangeas, hyacinth, gladiolus, catmint, allium or money for the purchase of these items.
If donations are plants, it would be preferable if they were already dug out and put into a marked pot with dirt. Plants and bulbs can be left at Patriots’ Park (behind the benches by the bricks with names on them) this week. If you wish to make a donation of money, checks should be made out to Troop 24 (note “Alex’s Eagle project” on memo line) and email committeechair@troop24riverside.com to have your donation picked up.

Volunteer work days will be July 29 to July 31 from 8 a.m. to noon each day, with volunteers working in two hour shifts. Both adult and scout volunteers are needed. Thank you for your help!

Service Opportunity – FLOS Workdays

Boy Scouts need to complete service hours as a requirement for rank advancement. For the Life rank, at least three hours of this service must be conservation-related. The Frederick Law Olmstead Society (FLOS) and Village of Riverside offer a monthly Landscape Workday, with the next project taking place on Saturday, June 30th from 9am-12pm. Come for an hour or three, whatever your schedule allows. This is an individual opportunity (not a troop outing), and since Troop 24 leaders will not be at this workday, you need to bring the Troop 24 Service Hour Form, have it signed by your supervisor at the workday, and turn in in to Scoutmaster Flaherty at the next troop activity. The FLOS workdays have been pre-approved as conservation service projects for Troop 24 scouts, so you do not need the service hour form signed ahead of time. Middle school and high school aged scouts may attend with or without their parent, but you must bring this Volunteer Liability Release Statement signed by your parent. This month’s project will take place at Riverside’s Indian Gardens and Patriots Park. Wear long pants and long sleeves, bring your work gloves and a water bottle. All other supplies will be provided. For more information, see the FLOS website.

Help Needed This Week on Jon M’s Eagle Project!

Jon M. needs some volunteers for his Eagle Project this Wednesday and Thursday!! Thanks to those who have helped start the project – but more help is needed the next few days. Service hours will be given to scouts who volunteer.

Project Description: We will be improving the storage of costumes and props for the Hauser drama department, including removing all items from the storage loft, organizing and inventorying them and placing them back in the storage loft.

Special Instructions: Each volunteer will need to bring an I.D. with them, and sign in at the Hauser office, where their names will be on a list of volunteers. Please come to the auditorium stage after checking in. We will be working in the building while school is in session so we will need to act accordingly. You will go right from the office and into the auditorium that is next door. If you do not have a driver’s license or school I.D. you will not be allowed to enter the school. The Friday shift may not be needed, and there will be an email regarding its cancellation in the morning.

Service Project at The Boulevard – Sunday, April 29th

Our troop’s chartered organization, the Riverside Presbyterian Church, prepares, transports and serves a hot meal for 45-75 residents of The Boulevard (Chicago, Illinois) on the last Sunday of every month. The Boulevard provides a healing environment and resources to help ill and injured homeless adults restore their health, rebuild their lives and regain self-sufficiency. RPC has requested that scouts transport and serve the meal for the month of April (food will be purchased/prepared by church members). We are in need of a small group – 4 scouts and 2 adults- to participate in the service project. We will meet at the RPC kitchen at 2:30 on Sunday, April 29th, and be home around 6pm. This project is easy and rewarding, plus you will get to share in the meal of White Fence Farm chicken.
