Service Opportunity Sunday April 23

The Riverside Lions Club has requested our help at their annual Chicken Dinner. This dinner is their main fundraiser for their charitable projects such as service to the blind and visually impaired. The Lions Club has asked for scouts to help clear tables and assist around the kitchen as needed. They would like to have four to six scouts during the hours of noon to 5 pm on Sunday, April 23. The event will be held at the Riverside Village Hall at 27 Riverside Road. Service hours will be given for participation. Bring our Troop Service Hour Form and remember to get it signed after your shift. You should report to Lions Club member Jon Jansky at the event. Since this is a fundraiser for another organization, BSA rules state that you should NOT wear your scout uniform. For more information on the Riverside Lions Club, see their website at http://e-clubhouse.org/sites/riversidetownship/

Conservation Service Opportunity

Boy Scouts need to complete service hours as a requirement for rank advancement. For the Life rank, at least three hours of this service must be conservation-related. The Frederick Law Olmstead Society (FLOS) and Village of Riverside offer a monthly Landscape Workday, with the next project taking place on Saturday, March 11th from 9am-12pm. Come for an hour or three, whatever your schedule allows. Middle school and high school aged scouts may attend with or without their parent, but you must bring this waiver signed by your parent. Since Troop 24 leaders will not be at this workday, you need to bring the Troop 24 Service Hour Form, have it signed by your supervisor at the workday, and turn in in to Scoutmaster Flaherty at the next troop meeting. The FLOS workdays have been pre-approved as conservation service projects for Troop 24 scouts, so you do not need the service hour form signed ahead of time. This month’s project will take place at Riverside’s Longcommon and Downing Road Triangle. Wear long pants and long sleeves, bring your work gloves and a water bottle. All other supplies will be provided. This month’s work will be weeding and invasive species removal.

Future FLOS Workdays:
Longcommon & Downing triangle: Apr 8th
Indian Gardens (Scout Cabin area): Apr 29th (RBHS Day of Service) & Sept 30th
Patriots Park: Apr 29th (RBHS Day of Service) & Jun 3rd
Harrington Park – May 13th
Swan Pond: Jul 15th & Jul 29th

1,000 Trees Service Project

Troop 24 will participate in Riverside’s annual 1,000 Trees Planting Project – Saturday, November 19 from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Volunteers should meet at the Riverside United Methodist Church, 82 Woodside Road for a brief lecture on how to plant tree seeds. Following the lecture, volunteers are divided into teams to plant previously collected tree seeds in the village’s natural areas along the Des Plaines River. When the teams are done, they return to United Methodist Church for a hot chili dinner. This reforestation effort will be fun, rewarding and easy, and this project will earn scouts conservation service hours needed for rank advancement. Participants should wear warm clothes, gloves, boots and a hat, or whatever outerwear is appropriate for the day’s weather. Scouts do not need to commit to the entire time period to participate.
