Den Chief Training on October 26

One of the jobs available to boy scouts (for rank advancement) is to serve as a Den Chief. A Den Chief helps Cub Scout Den Leaders and Webelos Leaders with Den Meetings (usually once or twice per month).

Any scout who is interested in becoming a den chief should attend the training, which will be held on Saturday, October 26, 2013 from 8:30 to noon at Grace Lutheran Church, 7300 Division Street, River Forest, IL 60305.

Den Chief Training

The Des Plaines Valley Council is offering training for Den Chiefs on September 14. A den chief is basically an assistant to a den leader for a Cub Scout den. This position would qualify as a “position of responsibility” to meet the rank advancement for Star, Life & Eagle. This is a great job for a scout with a younger brother in Cub Scouts, but can work for any scout who is willing to commit to attending the den meetings for a particular den (usually once per month). Interested scouts can sign up for the training, and should also contact Scoutmaster Hartwig or Asst. Scoutmaster Rogers about being assigned to this position as a troop job. More information about the training is available here: http://www.bsa-dpvc.org/Training/TD/DenChief.php

Wilderness First Aid Course June 22-23

BSA now requires at least one person in a group to be certified in Wilderness First Aid to participate in high adventure treks (Philmont, etc.). This course can be taken from various BSA-approved providers, but the cost varies considerably. The weekend of June 22-23, the class will be offered in Western Springs, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. both days, for $75. Registration and payment is required by June 8. More information is available here:  Wilderness First Aid

Eagle Coach Training November 15

This Thursday, November 15, we have a rare opportunity. We have Eagle Coach training that will be held at the Riverside Township Hall from 7-9pm. Close and easy to get to! (http://www.bsa-dpvc.org/Training/Training_Fliers/121115_EagleCoach.pdf) We have about half a dozen boys that may need coaches within the next 6 months. The troop could really use some parents to act as dedicated coaches for these boys starting their Eagle Service projects.

Regardless if you would consider being an Eagle Coach for a boy in the troop, if you are the parent of a Life Scout, please consider attending this training session. It will help you understand better what the scout is trying to accomplish with his project, what is expected of the scout, with what the coach will try to assist (and what he will not), as well as what the parent(s) can do to aid their son. We’ve found that there are many misconceptions from both the scout and the parent(s) with regard to Eagle Service projects and this training will help to clear them up considerably.

NOTE: This is training for adults. It is NOT the Life-to-Eagle presentation. Thus, if you can attend, it will only be for the parent and not the scout.

Den Chief Training September 8

Important information for scouts who need a Troop job for advancement (Scouts of 1st Class rank or above).

Des Plaines Valley Council will offer Den Chief training on Saturday, September 8, in LaGrange Highlands. Den chiefs work with the den leader to plan, prepare, and run the meeting. The Troop has been asked by the Pack to assist them by providing den chiefs. In addition to helping the Pack, it allows boy scouts to fulfill a requirement for rank advancement. Due to the size of our Troop, it is difficult to provide enough “jobs” within the Troop, potentially delaying a scout’s advancement.

Especially if your family has a boy scout as well as a cub scout, this is an excellent opportunity, but the job is open to any scout of 1st class rank or above.

There is a short window for registering (by September 4), so please print out the registration form. There is a cost of $5. Contact Asst. Scoutmaster Mark Janopoulos (mark@janopoulos.com) with any questions.

Training Opportunity

The Three Fires Council (headquartered in St. Charles, IL) is holding a Training Academy on Saturday, November 12. They have some excellent courses available–many of them different than the ordinary basic training. The cost is $30, which includes lunch, and allows you to take up to five classes. The training will take place at East Aurora High School. Most of the courses are for adult leaders, but Den Chief training is also available for scouts. Registration is available online. ‘Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills’ April 29-May 1

To be considered “fully trained,” a Scoutmaster, Asst. Scoutmaster, Webelos Den Leader, or Venturing Leader must complete the Outdoor Leader Skills class. The registration form is available at the Council Service Center and on the Council website at: http://www.bsa-dpvc.org/Training/Training_Fliers/110429_IOLS.pdf

Boards of Review

One of the duties of the Troop Committee is to conduct Boards of Review for scouts who are advancing in rank. We currently have 70 active scouts, including twenty-three 5th Grade scouts. Consequently, the number of boards needed will be increasing. BSA has an excellent on-line training resource for conducting a Board of Review–not the interactive training, but a document you can print or read online.

All current Committee members, and anyone who might be interested in being active in the Troop Committee, is encouraged to read this:
