Deadline Tomorrow, Tuesday 6/7 – Kankakee River State Park Biking, Canoeing & Kayaking Campout Signup Available – June 10-12, 2022

We apologize for the short turn around for this one; please sign up as soon as possible for this event (deadline Tuesday evening).

Please join Troop 24 on our last campout of the season at Kankakee River State Park, leaving Friday, June 10, and returning Sunday, June 12!

Scouts should come prepared to camp in tents for two nights.   We have two activities planned (we will need several parent volunteers to sign up as leaders/chaperones in order to hold this outing):

  1. Canoeing/Kayaking:  The canoeing/kayaking will be a 12-mile, 3-5 hour trip on Saturday, outfitted by Reed’s.
  • Scouts MUST be 13, have achieved First Class rank & have Swimming Merit Badge in order to canoe or kayak.
  • Kayaking is recommended for scouts with kayaking experience. Scouts will be in single kayaks and will need to be fit/strong enough to paddle for the full 12 miles.

or

  1. Bicycling: The biking will be done on a 10.5 mile paved bike path through the park.
  • Biking is available for all Scouts.
  • Scouts must wear a helmet to bike.
  • Scout parents must make sure that the scout’s bicycle is in good working order prior to the outing.

 Volunteers

In order to offer two activities we need parent volunteers to participate.  If you are able to attend this outing and help out by either chaperoning the biking or the canoe/kayaking we would really appreciate the help.  Or if you can drive scouts either to or from this outing; please consider helping our leaders in this way.    If you would like to attend, please fill out the Leader/Chaperone Registration form; if you are willing to help drive, please indicate on your Scout’s Registration form your willingness to drive.  The nice thing about Kankakee is that it is only about 1-hour drive, so you can join whenever it works in your schedule.

 Important Information

  • Please drop your Scout, their bike, bike helmet, and gear off at RPC at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. We will return about 10am on Sunday.
  • Scouts who are canoeing or kayaking must have a signed Reeds waiver in order to participate.
  • Scouts must have a bike helmet if they are biking.
  • Deadline for signing up for the outing is Tuesday, June 7.
  • The Scout cost for this outing is $85 per scout for canoeing (2 per canoe) or $95 per scout for a single kayak.
  • We will provide transportation for all bikes in one of the two Troop trailers.
  • All participating Scouts must return equipment and participate in clean up at 7:00 pm on Thursday, June 16 at RPC.
  • FYI, Scouting Activity Forms A, B1 & B2 are required for troop campouts. Form C on the last page is not required for this activity, but is the Pre-Participation Physical Form required for Camp Tesomas.
  • Please fill out a form for each scout and each leader/chaperone. Scouts and Leaders must register and pay by Sunday, June 2.

To register:

  • Register each participant separately if you have multiple family members interested in attending.

Swim Tests at Pav YMCA Wednesday, June 8 at 7:30 pm

*We have several posts today so please be sure to read to the end.*

All scouts attending summer camp at Tesomas and adults attending Tesomas who intend to boat or swim should plan to take the Boy Scout swim test. The swim test is required every year, not just for new scouts. You should take the test UNLESS you completed the Swimming Merit Badge in 2022. Scouts and adults attending the Lake Michigan sailing trip or boating in Kankakee should also take the swim test prior to the trip.

The swim test will be offered for Troop 24 members at the Pav YMCA (in Berwyn) on the following date:

Wednesday, June 8th at 7:30 pm – sign up HERE
Wednesday, June 22 at 7:30 pm – sign up HERE

Scouts will need to bring swim trunks, swim goggles (recommended) and a towel. There is no fee for the Swim Test and you will not need to purchase a YMCA guest pass.

If you do not attend one of these test dates, you will be asked to take the test upon arrival at Camp Tesomas or you will be designated a non-swimmer.

Honor Flight Welcome – Wednesday, June 15th

In the Scout oath, each scout promises to do their Duty to God and Country. The Duty to Country means that each Scout will serve our nation and show love and respect for our country and its heroes.
Troop 24 has been invited to join the Honor Flight Chicago in its Welcome Parade for veterans on Wednesday, June 15th evening. You can read more about the Honor Flight Chicago program HERE.
Scouts and Leaders must wear full uniform (including scarf, sash and olive or khaki pants or shorts). Non uniformed adults and middle/high school aged siblings may join, but will only be allowed in the baggage area, not the mezzanine parade area.
Please make a poster with the words “Welcome Home Veterans” or “Thank You for Your Service” to bring to the event.
We will meet at the RPC driveway at 6:45 pm on Wednesday, June 15th to carpool to Midway Airport. The event will conclude at approximately 10:30 pm.
Please let us know that you will be there by signing up HERE.

Kankakee Biking, Canoeing & Kayaking Campout – Signup comes out tomorrow!

Our ever-popular Kankakee campout will be held on June 10-12 and the signup will be live tomorrow, 6/1.

We will need lots of chaperones for this event in order to meet the scout leadership requirements. The good news is it is close, so come for just the bike ride, and stay one night, both nights, or just for dinner after the drop off.

Here is a link to the company that provides the boating trips – https://www.reedscanoetrips.com/

Be on the lookout for the signup 6/1.

Thanks

Memorial Day May 30, 2022

Court of Honor – Time Change

We have changed the start time of our Spring Court of Honor to 7:30 pm this Thursday due to the Preschool Graduation Ceremony at the church.
Here is the information post again with the corrected times:

In place of our usual Thursday troop meeting, there will be a Court of Honor on May 26th, starting at 7:30 p.m. in the Riverside Presbyterian Church Social Hall. Scouts who wish to participate as color guard, candle lighters, etc. should arrive at 7:15 p.m.

In the Boy Scouts of America a court of honor is a troop activity where scouts and their families come together to get their awards and have a good time together. It is important for the scout’s family members to be there for their scout receiving his rank advancement, merit badges, and other awards.

Troop 24 holds two Courts of Honor each year–one in the fall and one in the spring. We expect that all scouts participate in these events, unless there is an unavoidable conflict. Scouts should dress in full uniform, including their scarf and merit badge sash (if they have one). Please no jeans or athletic apparel.

We also ask that each scout have at least one parent or grandparent present. Parents as well as scouts come forward when rank advancements are announced.

We need refreshments for the reception after the ceremony – please bring your items to the kitchen off the church social hall. We need adult volunteers to help set up and clean up. If you can volunteer, please e-mail committeechair@troop24riverside.com.
