Popcorn orders must be picked up this Saturday, November 19, between Noon and 2:00 pm at Scoutmaster Ringbloom’s garage – 148 Gage Road, Riverside, according to the following schedule:

Noon – 12:30 pm – Last names A-F
12:30 – 1:00 pm – Last names G – K
1:00 – 1:30 pm – Last names L – Q
1:30 – 2:00 pm – Last names R – Z

Troop 24 is planning a 2-night camp-out at Herrick Lake Forest Preserve in Wheaton over Thanksgiving weekend leaving Friday, Nov. 25, and returning Sunday, Nov. 27. Scouts will be sleeping in a heated cabin on the floor. Please bring sleeping bag, pad, optional camping pillow, water bottle, cup (for soup, hot chocolate, etc.), WARM clothing, extra shoes (maybe boots depending on the weather). The deadline for signing up for the outing is Thursday, Nov. 17. Please fill out a form for each scout. The Scout cost for this outing is $45. Scouts must wear their Class A uniforms to travel. On September 17-18, there was a biking trip to the I&M Canal. To get to the campsite the 10 scouts and 4 leaders went for a four-mile bike ride along the canal. When all of the scouts got there, they set up their tents. Everything else had already been set up by Mrs. Hopkins and Abraham O. The scouts’ campsite was directly across the canal from the Harborside Marina along the DesPlaines River. After that, the scouts made a foil dinner. The foil dinner is a variety of meats and vegetables wrapped in foil and warmed by being put in the fire. After dinner, some scouts went to sleep, and some goofed off. When the scouts woke up it was raining. They put away the tents and had dry cereal for breakfast in a pavilion. They then drove back to Riverside and were dropped off at their houses.

Scouts will be working on the First Aid Merit Badge with Asst. Scoutmaster Dr. Stephanie Tennery-Lanken on November 17, December 1, and December 15. First Aid is an Eagle-required merit badge. There are a number of other first-aid related rank requirements that will be covered during these meetings.

For scouts working on the American Heritage merit badge, and any other scouts & parents interested in learning more about the history of our immediate area, please join Mr. Robertson and Mrs. Hopkins-Ourth this Saturday, November 5, for an outing to the Chicago Portage.

We will be joining a group led by Gary Mechanic, who will explore the “Birth Story of Chicago” from the geological beginnings of the Portage to how it is still functioning in Chicago today. The tour is approximately a ½ mile in length on a gravel path through the woods and will take about 2 hours. Wear long pants and walking shoes or boots. The Chicago Portage National Historic site is at 4800 S. Harlem, on the west side of Harlem Ave. (7200 W) just 2 blocks north of the Stevenson Expressway (I-55). Meet at the monumental statue of Marquette and Joliet and their Native American guide at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday.

Parents: if you don’t plan to stay for the outing, please bring your scout to the Portage and check in with one of the Troop leaders.

Since 1939 Riverside Presbyterian Church has chartered Troop 24.  Here is an opportunity to show our appreciation to the church that has provided so much for our Troop.

Join the RPC Church Family and fellow scouts in the All Church Family Work Day on November 13 from 1-3 pm.  We will be raking leaves and cleaning up around the church property.  Scouts should bring a rake and work gloves.  No sign up needed … just show up!   Time spent helping will count towards service hours needed for your rank advancement.

Remember – Do a Good Turn Daily!  Scouts be sure to check in/out with Mrs. Lynch so she can record your attendance and service hours.
