Waterfall Glen Orienteering November 7, 2015

On November 7, Troop 24 will be going to Waterfall Glen for our annual orienteering outing.

This is the only opportunity we have, outside of camp, for scouts to complete First Class Requirement 2: Using a map and compass, complete an orienteering course that covers at least one mile, and requires measuring the height and/or width of designated items (tree, canyon, ditch, etc.)

Scouts will also be able to finish First Class Requirement 1: Demonstrate how to find directions during the day and at night without using a compass; and Second Class Requirement 1b: Using a compass and a map together, take a five-mile hike (or 10 miles by bike) approved by your adult leader and your parent or guardian.

It is very important for scouts who need Orienteering (F2) to attend this outing.

Scouts who are working on the Cooking Merit Badge may also have the chance to complete MB Requirement 7. This is only for scouts who already started the MB (at Tesomas). Requirements 7(a) and 7(b) will be completed at the meeting this Thursday, October 29.  Please review the requirements ahead of time and be prepared to discuss them.  You will also need to bring your Cooking MB worksheets, books, paper and pen to the meeting.

We will be leaving RPC on Saturday, November 7, at approximately 8:00 a.m. and will return by mid-late afternoon.  This outing will be taking place outside, so please dress accordingly.  Scouts must travel in their Class A uniforms.  We will also need chaperones/drivers to help with this outing.

Veterans Day Hines VA November 7

Troop 24 has been given the distinguished honor of providing a Color Guard and Master of Ceremonies for the Hines VA Hospital Veteran’s Day program on Saturday, November 7, in conjunction with the Community Action Day committee of St. Mary’s Parish. “Star & Above” and Eagle Scouts will provide the Color Guard and Master of Ceremonies. All “Star & Above” scouts and Eagle Scouts are requested to be at Thursday’s meeting to meet with a representative from the Community Action Day Committee, plan and rehearse the program. This is a great honor and a valuable opportunity to honor to our nation’s veterans. We count on a strong turn out and participation from our most advanced and distinguished scouts to make this a memorable program.

Adult leaders are also needed. More details will be available at the October 29 Troop meeting.

Bring Books to Meeting Tonight

Scouts: please turn in your books to be checked tonight.

Popcorn Orders Due Tonight 10/15/15

ALL popcorn orders are due to our Popcorn Kernel TONIGHT. Scouts can bring orders to the meeting, or order forms and payment can be dropped off at Anne Kodama’s home. Please contact Anne at amkodama@sbcglobal.net to get directions to her house and schedule a drop-off time.

Orders must be accompanied by full payment (in other words, if your scout took any orders without getting payment, you will need to pay for the popcorn and get paid when it’s delivered. Scouts should not have sold with an I.O.U.).

Parents: please tally counts by popcorn variety and check the totals to be sure the money turned in equals the amount ordered. Our Popcorn Kernel prefers checks only. If your scout collected cash, please keep the cash and write a check to Troop 24 for that amount. Your scout’s names should be on all order forms, and forms and checks should be placed in an envelope.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, November 7, for Popcorn Pick-up. Please contact Anne with any questions.

Final Days for Selling Popcorn

We are entering the final days for our Scouts to sell Popcorn. All order forms are due at the Troop meeting, this Thursday, October 15. Take advantage of the good weather and earn more money for camp! Last chance to ask family, neighbors, co-workers and friends if they’d like to support Scouting through the purchase of Popcorn. All orders are due to Popcorn Kernel Anne Kodama by Thursday.

SELL MORE, EARN MORE
IN LIEU OF PRIZES, our Troop elected to receive an additional 5% credit to the Scouts’ popcorn sale totals. That’s a total of 35% of their individual sales total, including take and online orders, to be credited to next year’s summer camp fees. This goes a long way to assist families in bringing down the cost of Camp Tesomas. The more you sell, the closer you are to attending camp free of charge!

NEW THIS YEAR
As presented at Kick-Off, ALL Scouts selling at least $1,200 of popcorn remain eligible to participate in the “Choose Your Own Adventure” recognition program. Adventures include:
• iFly Indoor Skydiving
• Chicago Wolves Hockey Tickets
• Dave & Busters Power Card
• K1 Speed Indoor Go-Karting
The more you sell, the more Adventures your Scout earns! See 2015 Popcorn Incentives for more information.

ADDITIONAL INCENTIVES
Sell 1 item – Receive Popcorn Sale Patch
Collect 1 or more military donations – Receive Military Club Patch
Sell $700 – Choose 1 of the following: Blast Off Firetek Rocket, Multi-tool or $20 Walmart Gift Card
Sell $3,500 – Your name will be put on the Council’s Popcorn Cup Trophy
GRAND PRIZE – Sell $4,000 – Receive two tickets to a 2016 Chicago Blackhawks Game!!!
When turning in orders, please include both order forms and full payment in an envelope.

PARENTS – please review orders to confirm all totals are correct and full payment has been collected. Remember, all popcorn must be paid for in advance. You must make arrangements to drop off Popcorn Order Forms with the Popcorn Kernel if you are not attending Thursday’s meeting.

Popcorn pick-up will be Saturday, November 7.

Any Questions? Please contact our Popcorn Kernel at amkodama@sbcglobal.net.

Feed Our Community Service October 17, 2015

Troop 24 and Families,

We will be volunteering to package food with the Riverside/North Riverside Covenant of Churches, partnered with Outreach, for Feed Our Community Day.

As a Troop we will be helping at the 11:00 a.m. shift. Volunteers will be organized into small group assembly lines, preparing delicious, nutritious meals of pasta and cheese – all fortified with soy protein, nutrients, and vitamins – and bagged, labeled, weighed, and boxed. Meals will be distributed to local food pantries.

If a Scout and/or anyone in his family (must be >7 years of age) are interested in participating with Troop 24, please sign up below.

Scouts who check in/out with Mrs. Lynch during the shift will get service hours for their time.
Scouts and family members who are volunteering should report to North Riverside Village Commons on Saturday, October 17, at 10:45 a.m.. The shift will be approximately 1.5 hours.

Sign up by Thursday, October 15: http://troop24riverside.com/2015/10/feed-our-community-day-2015-form/
