Mosquito Frames?

Do any of our senior scouts have “experienced” mosquito frames that they might be willing to pass on to a younger scout going to Mach? Scouts or leaders who would be willing to pass along a frame, please contact Nancy Hopkins (or drop it off).

Camp Mach Bog Hike

One of the highlights of Camp Mach for most scouts is the bog hike. This is an optional event, about 45 minutes long, and is a hike led by camp staff through the bog. Scouts return from the bog hike covered in mud, and then jump in the lake. (Hopefully, they then take a shower.) Please send OLD clothes and shoes for the bog hike, preferably ones that can be discarded after the hike. Your scout can bring them home, of course, but you may not want them after they’ve been through the bog, the lake, and stayed wet for several days afterward…

Mosquito Nets for Camp Mach

Scouts need mosquito nets for Camp Mach. A couple of sources for these nets are:

Campmor http://www.campmor.com/outdoor/gear/Product___86662

REI http://www.rei.com/product/783044

Scouts should bring black binder clips to attach the netting to the tent, or (optional) a home-made frame. (First-year campers will be using troop tents for at least the first night and definitely will not need frames. After the first 24 hours, some 6th grade scouts may choose to set up wall tents, in which case they will need mosquito netting.)

Instructions for constructing the frame are available here. If you opt to build the frame, please be sure your scout can assemble it without assistance.

Scouts Needed on July 3 for Flag Ceremony

Troop 24 has been invited to do a flag ceremony on Sunday, July 3, as part of the opening festivities for the concert in Guthrie Park in Riverside. Scouts need to be there by about 5:40 p.m. to lower the flag and then at about 5:50-6:00 p.m. will raise the flag during the national anthem. All we have to do is the flag – nothing more. Full uniforms required, of course! Please contact Mr. Rogers ASAP if you are able to participate: rogersr2@ameritech.net

Turn in Medical Forms

Don’t forget, we need medical forms for all scouts and adults who are attending any of our summer camps.

Philmont scouts & leaders: your medical forms are due TONIGHT at the meeting at RPC at 7:00.
Camp Mach scouts & leaders: your medical forms are due by July 15. Please drop them off to Liz Gomorczak or Nancy Hopkins.
Kayaking scouts & leaders: if you were given a date by Mr. Payne, stick with that date. Otherwise, drop off your forms no later than July 11 to Nancy Hopkins.

BSA now uses one form for all types of outings. You can get it online at http://www.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/34605_Letter.pdf. You can save this form to your computer and fill it in by computer so the information will be available next year.

Reading Merit Badge

Mrs. Lanken invites all scouts to read over the summer and then meet with her in September to complete the Reading merit badge. You may have already signed up for a library summer reading program, or are reading books for school, so why not earn the merit badge at the same time? To get started, view the requirements, print out the worksheet, and start reading!

4th of July Pizza Booth

One of the Troop’s traditional fundraisers is a booth at Riverside’s 4th of July festivities. We will be selling slices of pizza, and we need scouts to work hour and a half shifts, with 8 boys and 2 adults per shift. We will have the first round of pizzas delivered at 9:00 a.m. The shifts will be:

8:45-10:15 a.m.
10:15-11:45 a.m.
11:45-1:15 p.m. (or until we run out of pizza and clean up)

Cub Scouts are selling lemonade, the Girl Scouts are selling other beverages, so we will only be selling pizza.

If you are able to work, please contact Ray Rogers at rogersr2@ameritech.net.

Philmont Training Hike – June 24-26

Philmont scouts will be camping at Starved Rock State Park this weekend. Please be at Riverside Presbyterian Church at 6:30 p.m., we will return on Sunday, mid-afternoon.

This is our final dress rehearsal for Philmont so please have ALL your gear. Each person will be carrying their own food so remember to bring a bag large enough to hold your food in your back pack.

We can not locate the pump water purifier. This was carried, but not used on our Kettle Moraine trip. It is in a black nylon carrying case. Please contact me if you have this equipment.

The cost of this camp out will be $35 per person.
