Welcome back Troop 24 from your long winter break.  We completed our Citizenship module and we will be working on knots and lashings for all those still needing to complete these requirements.  January is Sports Month and we start with a Dodgeball Tournament.  Citizenship in the Nation merit badge will meet with Mr. Perry again, so bring your completed merit badge requirements.

Last Chance to LUGE!

Luge registration closes this Sunday Jan. 7th, 2018 so if you haven’t signed up yet, now’s your chance!

Luge weekend is sure to be an exciting outing filled with thrills and excitement as our scouts “sled” down the 850′ track and the hit the pool for some relaxation afterwards.

The cost of this trip is $115. (This includes the luge ticket, hotel accommodations, Saturday dinner and Sunday breakfast.)

Troop 24 Happy New Year

Happy New Year to our Troop 24 family.  The New Year holds many exciting adventures for Troop 24 Scouts so don’t miss out.

Thursday’s January 4 Meeting will only be for those scouts working to complete their Scout or Tenderfoot ranks.  Leaders will be available to review your advancement requirements and help with your scout skills.  Thursday at 7pm at RPC.  The next regular meeting will be January 11.

Luge Reminder – Don’t Wait!

Luge weekend spots at Muskegin Winter Sports Complex are filling up fast!

Sign up NOW before the holidays to make sure you get a spot to this winters HOTTEST event!

On Feb. 3rd & 4th, Troop 24 will be heading up to the Muskegon Winter Sports Complex  for an exciting day of learning to luge on an olympian designed course!

Scouts will leave Riverside Saturday morning, eat lunch on the drive up and will enjoy 2 ½ hours on the Luge course in the afternoon. After Luging, Scouts will head to the hotel where they will enjoy swimming, pizza dinner and a great time hanging out. Scouts will head back to Riverside Sunday morning after breakfast and hope to be home between Noon-1pm.

Registration closes January 7th, 2017 – no exceptions!

The track provides an Olympic thrill with the safety of the participant in mind. Top speeds of approximately 30 mph are possible from the public start area located about 3/4 of the way up the track.  The 850’ track was designed by three-time Olympian Frank Masley and consists of six curves and two starting areas. Coaches are on hand to teach and assist both beginners and those who have slid before.  Scouts will have a 2.5 hour session, which will include lessons and coaching.

Boys will need to be able to carry a 25-40 lb sled up [lots of] stairs to starting area.

 

OTHER:

-The luge insurance provider requires ALL luge participants to show proof of health insurance and a signed waiver in order to  participate in luge on our track.

-Due to the nature of this event, we will only be able to process refunds until registration closes on Jan. 7th, 2018. Once registration has closed (Jan. 7th, 2018) we will no longer be able to process a refund of the event charge ($115). However, if another Scout is able to take your place, we will indeed process a refund.

Last Thursday Meeting of 2017

Troop 24 welcomes guest speaker Hon. David Navarro who will speak to us about the Constitutional rights and obligations of a U.S. Citizen to complete First Class requirement 9a.   Judge Navarro was appointed by the Illinois Supreme Court as a Circuit Judge to the Circuit Court of Cook County on May 25, 2017. He is currently assigned to the First Municipal Division where he presides over felony preliminary hearings, misdemeanors and traffic related offenses.  Prior to becoming a judge, David Navarro was an Assistant Attorney General with the Illinois Attorney General’s Office where he served as Chief of the Public Integrity Bureau.  From 1994-2009, he served as an Assistant State’s Attorney with the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office. During his time with Cook County, he served as the supervisor of the Professional Standards Unit of the office. He was appointed as a Special Assistant United States Attorney shortly after.  Meeting will begin in the Social Hall promptly at 7:00 pm.  We are in need of a projector and cords for a laptop if someone can bring it to the meeting.

2018 High Adventure White Water Rafting Trek

Register for The 2018 summer High Adventure trek today!

Troop 24 is going to the Smoky Mountains July 6th-14th, 2018 to Camp Daniel Boone for a white water rafting adventure of a lifetime! Five Rivers in Five Days each with Class III- IV rapids.  For more information go to : https://www.campdanielboone.org/5rivers.  This is a VERY popular and exciting trip and the Camp has limited spaces, so please register now so we can secure our trip.  This is a High Adventure Trek and scouts must be: a) First Class or above; b) Completed 8th Grade or 14 yoa by the June 1, 2018; and c) completed Swimming Merit Badge.

The final cost of the trip is expected to be around $650 per Scout. To reserve your spot on this awesome trip we require a $50 deposit by December 22.

Klondike Derby – Saturday, January 20, 2018

Troop 24 will be entering the Voyageur Trace Klondike Derby at Bemis Woods South on Saturday, January 20, 2018.  Scouts will meet at Riverside Presbyterian Church at 7:30 a.m. and return the same day at approximately 3:00 p.m.

We will form our annual Lost Boy Patrol of  8 scouts to take the Troop 24 sled through a course of Scout Craft activities and compete in the VT Iditarod Sled Race in the afternoon. Scouts should be prepared for fun and Scout Craft challenges. The Lost Boy patrol will meet during the Thursday meetings on Jan 11 & 18 to prepare for the race, review their scout skills, and get the sled ready to fly!  All activities will be outside, so scouts should dress appropriately for the weather.

The cost of this outing will be $8.00 and a can of non-cream soup (to be dumped into the “Klondike Kettle”). Scouts should also bring a sack lunch/snack to accompany the soup, water bottle/canteen for the trail, and a lot of enthusiasm to bring home the Gold!

We are in need of leaders and drivers. Since this outing is close, drivers do not need to stay. Adults are welcome to stay and participate. Space is limited for this outing.
