Ski Trip – Deadline Sunday 8:00 p.m.

This is your last chance to sign up for the ski trip to Sunburst (February 25-27). We advertised this as a “family outing,” meaning that parents and siblings are welcome to attend. However, scouts (other than Webelos 2 scouts) do NOT need to have a family member sign up in order to go. We still have space left in the cabin. We will accept registrations through Sunday, February 20 at 8:00 p.m.

Sign up online.

Ski Outing – Time is Running Out

Fourteen people have registered for the Ski trip (4 adults, 9 scouts, and 1 sibling). The camp at which we will be staying on Saturday night needs a tentative count for the meals. If you have been considering going, please sign up ASAP. More information is available here: http://troop24riverside.com/2011/01/sunburst-ski-trip-february-26-27/

Summer Activities

Troop 24 has 3 different camp opportunities for our scouts this summer:

Philmont Scout Ranch – July 13 to 27 – for scouts 8th grade and above. It’s not too late to sign up for Philmont! For a description of the trek: http://troop24riverside.com/2010/12/philmont-this-summer/ For more information, please contact Asst. Scoutmaster Jim Ringbloom at jrringbloom@sbcglobal.net.

Kayaking in the Apostle Islands – July 10 to 16 OR July 16 to 25 – for scouts 13 or older. We planned this outing before we were selected for Philmont. We will participate only if we have enough scouts and leaders sign up. If you are interested, please contact Michael Payne at pain08@comcast.net ASAP to let him know which week you prefer. We will cancel this outing if we don’t have enough interest.

Camp Mach – July 31 to August 6 – for all scouts. For more information and to register: http://troop24riverside.com/2011/02/camp-mach-july-26-august-6/

Sunburst Ski Trip – February 26-27

Troop 24 is planning a family ski outing on Saturday, February 26, to Sunburst Recreation in Wisconsin for Skiing, Snowboarding, and/or Tubing from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. We will leave from RPC at 7:00 a.m. (2 1/2 hours drive), participate in snow sports at Sunburst, and stay overnight at Camp Matawa cabins (YMCA camp close to Sunburst). Dinner on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday will be provided at Camp Matawa. We will return to RPC around noon on Sunday, February 27.

This event is open to all scouts and their families. Webelos 2 scouts are welcome with an Akela. This is a great opportunity to enjoy some winter fun and work on a merit badge. Cabin space is limited so sign up early if you want to stay overnight. Families can make this a day trip if they cannot stay overnight. Please register each person individually.

The BSA requires scouts to wear helmets while skiing, so the cost of helmet rental is included in the prices listed below.

Costs per person:

Ski rental, lift ticket, lesson, and helmet $45;

Snowboard rental, lift ticket, lesson, and helmet $60;

Cabin with meals $60.

Tube rental is also available. For scouts who may get tired of skiing, or who don’t want to ski or snowboard, we suggest that they bring cash for tube rental: 2 hours @ $16 or 3 hours @ $20.

Our leader in charge will be Bruce Robertson. Questions? Contact Bruce at brobertson5152@aol.com or Dawn Gmitro at dmgmitro@aol.com.

Klondike Derby – February 12, 2011

Troop 24 is planning a day outing to Bemis Woods on February 12, 2011, to participate in the Des Plaines Valley Council Klondike Derby. Scouts will meet at RPC at 7:15 a.m. and return the same day at approximately 4:00 p.m. The Derby this year will feature scout skills as well as games and contests. Each patrol should be ready for fun and challenges.

The cost will be $8 and a can of non-cream soup (to be dumped into a communal pot for “garbage can soup”).

We will be looking for drivers. Since this outing is close, drivers do not need to stay. If you can drive, please indicate the appropriate information with your son’s registration. Adults are welcome to stay and participate. If you would like to participate, please register and pay for yourself separately from your son.

Please remember you must register on the Troop online form AND pay (preferably using the online WePay system). If your son is not registered, he will not show up on the roster. Register here: http://troop24riverside.com/2011/01/klondike-derby-form/

Don’t Forget Luge Waivers & Insurance Card

Don’t forget – Everyone who plans to luge MUST have a signed waiver and copies of an insurance card (front AND back). If you did not drop these off to Dawn by 9:00 a.m. on Friday morning, bring them when you drop off your scout and give them to Ray Rogers. Scouts will not be allowed to luge without these items.

Outing Notes

Luge: A reminder for those attending the Luge outing this weekend–the Muskegon Sports Complex requires all Luge participants to sign a waiver and to provide proof of insurance. If you and/or your son have not already done so, please print and complete the Luge waiver and provide a copy of your insurance card (both front and back). You will NOT be allowed to participate without this waiver. You may drop them off to Dawn Gmitro by Friday 9:00 a.m., or hand them to Ray Rogers at drop-off on Saturday Morning (7:30 a.m. at RPC). We still have 6 spots open for the Luge outing.

Eagle Cave: We are in need of more drivers for the Eagle Cave outing, January 14-16. Please contact Dawn Gmitro at dmgmitro@aol.com if you are able to drive or if you have questions.

If you have not yet paid for either outing, please do so.
